The New York Knicks are prepared to clear salary cap space this summer for a potential run at LeBron James in free agency, a source told the New York Post's Marc Berman.
The Knicks would likely be in a position to clear significant cap room as it is, but Berman reports the hiring of new head coach David Fizdale could be the impetus for any attempt at luring James to Gotham. The pair were close when Fizdale was an assistant on LeBron's Miami Heat teams.
Enes Kanter and Kyle O'Quinn can opt out of their contracts this summer, opening up a possible $23 million for the Knicks. While Joakim Noah's albatross contract still hangs over the franchise, the bigger question is whether there's enough talent in New York to supplement James, with Knicks franchise cornerstone Kristaps Porzingis expected to miss a good chunk of next season as he recovers from ACL surgery.
James has been periodically linked to the Knicks over the years, including during his free-agent summer of 2010, when he ultimately signed with the Heat.
